When his great friend the Duke of Nevers is murdered in a dastardly plot by the COunt Gonzague, fencing master Lagardere (played by Daniel Auteuil) swears to avenge his death and to look after his beloved orphaned daughter, Aurore. Sixteen years later, after hiding with a touring theatre group, Lagardere returns to the suptious Paris court, disgises himself as Gonzague’s hunchback manservant, and waits for his moment to strike.
