39th Season

First performed in 1982 at The Royal Court Theatre Upstairs, Sue Townsend’s heartfelt comedy charts the efforts of a group of agoraphobic women who try to overcome their fears as they take their first steps into “The Outside”. Led by ex- agoraphobic, volunteer social worker Gwenda, and trainee social worker Fliss, the women assemble in a local church hall to run a rummage sale. While sorting through the rummage their individual fears and background stories erupt with a mixture of comedy, pathos and gritty reality.

As the afternoon progresses, the distinction between the carers and the cared for becomes less and less clear.

Contains adult humour

‘Very entertaining, witty and poignant, with ordinary people overcoming the fear to rejoin society.’ Northhants Telegraph

‘A very funny play, it earns its laughs from a deadly serious concern.’ The Times
