Will China and the West ever understand each other? Sir Claude MacDonald\, formerly Her Majes ty’s Minister Plenipotentiary to Peking\, does his best to resolve the iss ue.
\n‘Chinese Boxing’ is a topical and en tertaining one-man show with a powerful message about China and ‘The West’ \, inspired by the Siege of the Legations (diplomatic quarter) in Peking\, during the Boxer Uprising of 1900. The foreign diplomats held out for 55 days until relieved by an international force. Sir Claude commanded the de fence.
\nIn 1912 Sir Claude gives an illustrated talk to the Malvern branch of the Royal Asiatic Society. He describes his work in China and t he origins of the Boxer Uprising. As he reaches a critical point in the si ege the scene shifts to an antechamber in the Imperial Palace in Peking in 1900. The battle is raging a few hundred yards away. General Ronglu\, com mander of imperial forces\, waits to report to the Empress Dowager. He ass umes the audience is a foreign delegation. He gives his side of the story. It is not straightforward. He breaks off when the allied relief force bat ters on the gates of Peking. Pandemonium. Panic. Sir Claude is absent. Som eone must step forward\, calm the audience and conclude the story.
\n70 mins\, no interval.
\nThe performance will be f ollowed by a Q and A on relations between China and the West. Besides a pl aywright and actor\, Mark Kitto is a respected China pund it\, author of the books ‘China Cuckoo’ and ‘That’s China’. He contributed a long-running China column to Prospect Magazine.

Following the demise of Malvern’s short but famous water cure period the town had become\, by the late 1880s\, a p opular holiday destination well served by numerous hotels and boarding hou ses and connected via its four railway stations to all parts of the countr y. There was a pressing need for places of entertainment which led to the development of pleasure gardens\, concert halls and theatres. The talk wil l describe these and will look in particular at the principal surviving ve nue\, the Assembly Rooms and Winter Gardens (now called the Festival and F orum Theatres) which
\nwere the home for the ground – breaking drama festivals of the 1930s premiering the work of playwright Bernard Shaw and starring some of the most famous actors of the time..
\n\n
T he event will include a display of material from the Festivals including p>\n

\nWinston Churchill is arguably one of the most famous Englishmen that has ever lived. His ins pirational leadership helped win the Second World War\, and his parliament ary career of 62 years ensured he was responsible for momentous decisions.

\nAll these questions will be answered\ , and many more\, in Liz Grand’s superb\, moving\, sensitive and informati ve portrayal of Clementine Churchill. (Liz’s previous shows are ‘The Secon d Best Bed’ and ‘Where Is Mrs. Christie?’).
\nWinston said\, “my mos t brilliant achievement was my ability to be able to persuade my wife to m arry me.”

Based on Mary Shelley’s The Last Man
\nBy award-winning writer Sam Chittenden\, featuring Amy Kidd.
\nSet in a 21st-century world troubled by a deadly plague\, Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley’s 1826 nov el ‘The Last Man’ is poignant and hugely relevant today. Written after the death of her husband and three of her children\, it expresses Mary’s own sense of loss and isolation and features characters based on Mary herself\ , Percy Shelley\, Lord Byron and Claire Claremont.
\nThis one-woman adaptation explores the biographical elements of the story. It draws on Sh elley’s graphic depiction of a world wracked by a pandemic and the dangers of human arrogance.

\nA small town seeking publicity tries to bring together the qui ntuplet grandsons of the town’s oldest inhabitant. This film is mainly a v ehicle for the great Fernandel\, the wonderful comedic actor with the “hor se-faced” grin\, who plays not only the old man\, but all five grandsons. This is a classic French comedy with not only Fernandel but also Louis de Funes. By nature of the plot\, it is episodic featuring each of the grands ons and some of these cameos are gems. A clever film that will be a joy fo r old cinema lovers or equally lovers of old cinema.

The finest songs from the iconi c master of the modern chanson\, Jacques Brel\, come to life when this trio of singers perform their cabaret revue\, ‘Alive and Brel’. Fea turing well-known classics such as Ne me quitte pas/If You Go Away\, Amsterdam and Jacky\, Brel’s music is famed for its emotional power and ironic wit. His songs\, which have been recorded by in ternational stars ranging from Frank Sinatra and Dusty Springfield to Davi d Bowie and Marc Almond\, have been likened to miniature films\, laced wit h dark and passionate observations which paint a tableau of imperfect huma nity. The songs of Jacques Brel are guaranteed to bring a smile to your li ps or a tear to your eye.
\n‘A pleasant surprise packag e…very capable of depicting Brel’s catalogue. The blending of the three vo ices was particularly pleasing and gave the performance originality.’ —Simon Bishop\, Stage Talk Magazine

Starring Liz Grand as C lementine Churchill
\nWritten by Kit Hunter
\nSir Winston Churchill was recently voted No.1 in the top 100 Britons of a ll time by a nationwide poll of over a million voters. The epitome of stre ngth\, stubbornness and the British bulldog\, his inspirational leadership helped win the Second World War\, and his parliamentary career ensure tha t he was responsible for many of the momentous decisions which helped shap e this ‘sceptred isle’. He was an MP for 62 years.
\nThey say that b
ehind every great man\, there is a great woman. Was this true in Churchill
’s case? What of Clementine\, his wife for 56 years? Did he bully her like
he did so many other people? Was he as grumpy and irascible
\nhome a
s he often was in the House of Commons? Given his strength and conviction\
, did Clem have any influence on him at all? Or was she ‘the little lady a
t home’?
All these questions will be answered\, and many more\, in Liz Grand’s superb\, moving\, sensitive and informative portrayal of Clem entine Churchill. This was one of the great love affairs of all time\, no better illustrated than Winston saying\, “my most brilliant achievement wa s my ability to be able to persuade my wife to marry me.”
\nLiz Gran d has toured previous one-woman shows ‘The Second Best Bed’ and ‘Where Is Mrs Christie?’ which have delighted audiences.

The Mystery of Agatha Christie’s Eleven Lost Days
\nStarring Liz Grand as Agatha Christie
\nby Chris Jaeger
Agatha Christie was one of the greatest thriller writers of all time and c ertainly the most prolific. In 1926\, she was at the centre of a mystery a s perplexing as any of her fiction\, a series of events which sparked one of the biggest and most extensive police hunts in history. Her crashed car was discovered in Surrey and the famous author was missing\, presumed dea d by many\, for eleven days. However\, she was eventually found at a luxur y hotel in Harrogate. She claimed then\, and for the rest of the life\, th at she was suffering from amnesia and remembered nothing. Neither the pres s nor the police believed her.
\nDid Agatha Christie lie\, and if so why? Did she suffer from amnesia? Was it a publicity stunt? Or was there a darker secret involved in this disappearance which was to affect her for the rest of her life? The answer to all these questions will\, as in all good thrillers\, be revealed!

\nWritten by the multi-award winning playwr ight & director\, David Hare\, this compelling piece of theatre is told th rough the first-hand accounts of those most intimately affected.

\nHow much individual & collective suffering must we endu re before our shared humanity motivates us to take action?

\nThis charming\, funny and poignant play is about three old friends: Cec ily\, Reggie and Wilfred\, who are joking and reminiscing and making the m ost of ageing in a retirement home for opera singers. Each year\, on Octob er 10th\, they put on a concert to celebrate Verdi’s birthday. The three w ill be performing together. However\, their peace is destroyed with the ar rival of Jean\, an old friend of theirs who worked successfully on a Quart et with them many years ago. Painful memories are brought to the surface\, particularly for Reg\, who had a disastrous marriage to Jean. She disrupt s their equilibrium.
\n“Quartet” is a beautiful and delightful play that is full of wicked and saucy humour about growing old and about art. It is a play of hope and confidence for people who in thei r retirement fear they may no longer have much to offer.
\nIt is a p lay that shows that old people still have a zest for life and still have t he same desires\, needs and worries as they did when they were young.
