Will China and the West ever understand each other? Sir Claude Mac Donald\, formerly Her Majesty’s Minister Plenipotentiary to Peking\, does his best to resolve the issue.
\n‘Chinese Boxing’ is a topical and entertaining one-man show with a powerful message about China and ‘The West’\, inspired by the Siege of the Legations (dipl omatic quarter) in Peking\, during the Boxer Uprising of 1900. The foreign diplomats held out for 55 days until relieved by an international force. Sir Claude commanded the defence.
\nIn 1912 Sir Claude gives an illu strated talk to the Malvern branch of the Royal Asiatic Society. He descri bes his work in China and the origins of the Boxer Uprising. As he reaches a critical point in the siege the scene shifts to an antechamber in the I mperial Palace in Peking in 1900. The battle is raging a few hundred yards away. General Ronglu\, commander of imperial forces\, waits to report to the Empress Dowager. He assumes the audience is a foreign delegation. He g ives his side of the story. It is not straightforward. He breaks off when the allied relief force batters on the gates of Peking. Pandemonium. Panic . Sir Claude is absent. Someone must step forward\, calm the audience and conclude the story.
\n70 mins\, no interval.
\n< p>The performance will be followed by a Q and A on relations between China and the West. Besides a playwright and actor\, Mark Kitto is a respected China pundit\, author of the books ‘China Cuckoo ’ and ‘That’s China’. He contributed a long-running China column to Prospect Magazine.\nPraise for Chinese Boxing
\n‘A sti mulating and original show\,’ Jonathan Freedland\, G uardian and Radio 4
\n‘Brilliantly conceived and acted… thought- provoking\, sad\, funny\, and culturally and politically relevant today\,’ Susan Crook\, TV exec producer and author

Following the demise of Malvern’s short but famous water cure period the town had becom e\, by the late 1880s\, a popular holiday destination well served by numer ous hotels and boarding houses and connected via its four railway stations to all parts of the country. There was a pressing need for places of ente rtainment which led to the development of pleasure gardens\, concert halls and theatres. The talk will describe these and will look in particular at the principal surviving venue\, the Assembly Rooms and Winter Gardens (no w called the Festival and Forum Theatres) which
\nwere the home for the ground – breaking drama festivals of the 1930s premiering the work of playwright Bernard Shaw and starring some of the most famous actors of the time..
\n\n
The event will include a display of material fro m the Festivals including

We live in a time of ‘Endlings’ – the last individual of a species – caused b y human actions. You may remember Lonesome George\, the last Pinta Island Tortoise\, but do you remember Turgi\, the last Polynesean Tree Snail? He died in a plastic box and his grave marker read “1.5 million years BC to J anuary 1996”. In this quirky\, humourous\, physical performance\, Strange Futures ask some difficult questions\, without blaming. How can we stop vi ewing ourselves as separate from the rest of he living world? Should we\, perhaps\, be choosing to move towards a human Endling. What
\nif tha t Endling was you?
\n\n
Strange Futures have consulted enviro nmental specialists and been
\nworking creatively on a local nature reserve to develop a physical
\nvocabulary that responds to the envi ronment\, with extra support from

WORLD PREMIERE
\nStarring Liz Grand as Clementine Churchill
\nWritten by Kit Hunter
\nWinston Churchill is arguably one of the most famous Englishmen t hat has ever lived. His inspirational leadership helped win the Second Wor ld War\, and his parliamentary career of 62 years ensured he was responsib le for momentous decisions.
\nThey say that behind every great man\, there is a great woman. Was this true in Churchill’s case? What of Clemen tine\, his wife for 56 years? Did he bully her like he did so many other p eople? Was he as grumpy and irascible at home as he often was in the House of Commons? Given his strength and conviction\, did Clem have any influen ce on him at all? Or was she ‘the little lady at home’?
\nAll these questions will be answered\, and many more\, in Liz Grand’s superb\, movin g\, sensitive and informative portrayal of Clementine Churchill. (Liz’s pr evious shows are ‘The Second Best Bed’ and ‘Where Is Mrs. Christie?’).
\nWinston said\, “my most brilliant achievement was my ability to be ab le to persuade my wife to marry me.”

\nA small town seeking publicity trie s to bring together the quintuplet grandsons of the town’s oldest inhabita nt. This film is mainly a vehicle for the great Fernandel\, the wonderful comedic actor with the “horse-faced” grin\, who plays not only the old man \, but all five grandsons. This is a classic French comedy with not only F ernandel but also Louis de Funes. By nature of the plot\, it is episodic f eaturing each of the grandsons and some of these cameos are gems. A clever film that will be a joy for old cinema lovers or equally lovers of old ci nema.

Dancing at Lughnasa\, set in the summer of 1936 Ireland was hailed by Time magazine as “the most elegant and rue ful memory play since The Glass Menagerie”. The story of five sisters\, li ving a fragile life in rural Ireland\, is told through flashbacks of one o f the sisters’ illegitimate son\, Michael. Though the sisters’ tragic fate s are revealed through Michael’s memories of that summer when he was only seven\, the play is lightened by their mutual love and support\, shared hu mour and moments of wild abandon when their erratically functioning radio fills the house with a cocktail of 1930s song and dance together with Iris h traditional music. This almost carefree\, yet precarious\, world is dist urbed with the homecoming of their long-lost brother Jack\, who has “gone native” after years of missionary work in Uganda. To add to the turmoil\, Gerry\, Michael’s adventurer father pays one of his infrequent visits and the impact of Lughnasa\, the Pagan Harvest Festival\, looms large on the h orizon.
\nDancing at Lughnasa is a play about love and loss and fami ly set against a background of strict Catholicism and Paganism.

\nSir Winston Churchill was recently voted No.1 in the top 100 Britons of all time by a nationwide poll of over a million voters. The epitome of strength\, stubbornness and the British bulldog\, h is inspirational leadership helped win the Second World War\, and his parl iamentary career ensure that he was responsible for many of the momentous decisions which helped shape this ‘sceptred isle’. He was an MP for 62 yea rs.
\nThey say that behind every great man\, there is a great woman.
Was this true in Churchill’s case? What of Clementine\, his wife for 56 y
ears? Did he bully her like he did so many other people? Was he as grumpy
and irascible
\nhome as he often was in the House of Commons? Given h
is strength and conviction\, did Clem have any influence on him at all? Or
was she ‘the little lady at home’?
All these questions will be an swered\, and many more\, in Liz Grand’s superb\, moving\, sensitive and in formative portrayal of Clementine Churchill. This was one of the great lov e affairs of all time\, no better illustrated than Winston saying\, “my mo st brilliant achievement was my ability to be able to persuade my wife to marry me.”
\nLiz Grand has toured previous one-woman shows ‘The Seco nd Best Bed’ and ‘Where Is Mrs Christie?’ which have delighted audiences.< /p>\n

The Mystery of Agatha Christie’s El

\nSta
rring Liz Grand as Agatha Christie
\nby Chris
Agatha Christie was one of the greatest thriller writers of all time and certainly the most prolific. In 1926\, she was at the centre of a mystery as perplexing as any of her fiction\, a series of events which sparked one of the biggest and most extensive police hunts i n history. Her crashed car was discovered in Surrey and the famous author was missing\, presumed dead by many\, for eleven days. However\, she was e ventually found at a luxury hotel in Harrogate. She claimed then\, and for the rest of the life\, that she was suffering from amnesia and remembered nothing. Neither the press nor the police believed her.
\nDid Agath a Christie lie\, and if so why? Did she suffer from amnesia? Was it a publ icity stunt? Or was there a darker secret involved in this disappearance w hich was to affect her for the rest of her life? The answer to all these q uestions will\, as in all good thrillers\, be revealed!

The Permanent Way
\nby David Hare
\nLudlow’s Here To There Producti ons are back with this gripping drama highlighting the chaos & traged y that followed the privatisation of the railways.
\nWritten by the multi-award winning playwright & director\, David Hare\, this compelling piece of theatre is told through the first-hand accounts of those most int imately affected.
\nHaving lost none of it’s potency over the last 1 9 years\, current rail strikes and the controversial privatisation of othe r key public services sees the issues raised within this play as being mor e relevant than ever.
\nHowever\, just as One Flew Over The Cuck oo’s Nest is not actually about asylums\, The Permanent Way uses the institution of the railways as a lens through which to explore un iversal themes of timeless resonance.
\nHow much individual & collec tive suffering must we endure before our shared humanity motivates us to t ake action?
\n“a compelling\, fast-moving and astringently witty collage of first-hand testimonies and conflicting points of view….The pic ture that emerges with great force from these vivid\, eloquently juxtapose d vignettes is of a debased culture that sets less store by the expertise that comes from intimate knowledge of a subject than by vacuous so-called management skills.” Independent

The Coach House Theatre is

In this well-illustrated talk\, Professor Buchanan will discuss what this hugely influential volume has offered to the world. The talk will include revealing points of comparison with previously published\, single-work ed itions of Shakespeare’s plays and some histories of loss\, sale\, theft\, and recovery that individual copies of the 1623 Folio have accrued in thei r passage down the centuries. In 2022 Professor Buchanan was invited by So theby’s New York to speak about a rare copy of the 1623 Shakespeare Folio that came up for sale.

Sue Townsend’s Bazaar and Rumm age is a witty and sometimes moving comedy which highlights the serious so cial problems that come with agoraphobia.
\nThe play brings together five agoraphobics who have been persuaded to venture out of their homes t o run a jumble sale. She has drawn real women\, not stereotypes and infuse d her script with sharply-observed humour.
\nShe once suffered from agoraphobia for three weeks and during that time it forced her to act in t he most ridiculous fashion. It was caused by her hating where she lived. T he answer was to move and as soon as she made that decision she was cured.
\nAll agoraphobics suffer great anxiety at the thought of going out . It is very sad but most sufferers can and will laugh about their experie nces.
\nThis play contains a little strong language.
\nThis amateur production is presented by arrangement with Concord e Theatricals Ltd. on behalf of Samuel French Ltd.

\nThis charming\, funny and poignant play is a bout three old friends: Cecily\, Reggie and Wilfred\, who are joking and r eminiscing and making the most of ageing in a retirement home for opera si ngers. Each year\, on October 10th\, they put on a concert to celebrate Ve rdi’s birthday. The three will be performing together. However\, their pea ce is destroyed with the arrival of Jean\, an old friend of theirs who wor ked successfully on a Quartet with them many years ago. Painful memories a re brought to the surface\, particularly for Reg\, who had a disastrous ma rriage to Jean. She disrupts their equilibrium.
\n“Quartet strong>” is a beautiful and delightful play that is full of wicked and sau cy humour about growing old and about art. It is a play of hope and confid ence for people who in their retirement fear they may no longer have much to offer.
\nIt is a play that shows that old people still have a zes t for life and still have the same desires\, needs and worries as they did when they were young.
